Y4Y’s Youth Cultural Ambassadors to continue hosting events for English-speakers
Published on December 20, 2021
Y4Y has been for youth, by youth, and about youth since its beginnings. In December 2016, a group of English-speaking youth came together and reflected on their status within Québec’s political landscape. After going through the ideation and consultation process, and working hard to create an organization that reflects their concerns and hopes for the future, Y4Y opened its doors in June 2018 and has been growing ever since. In Year One of the COM-Unity project, Y4Y connected with six Youth Cultural Ambassadors (YCAs) from different parts of the province through You Are Here: The Belonging Project. Each YCA hosted events in their region with the goal of fostering a deeper sense of belonging for youth as well as creating intergenerational connections. The YCAs also attended events hosted outside of their own regions, and learned about their communities right alongside their audiences.
"I learned so much, not only about other regions in Quebec at events organized by other YCAs, but about my own region as well. It was a truly enriching experience and I feel even more connected to my home."
- Honlee, YCA Lower North Shore
"The experience has been rewarding and eye-opening. The pandemic has been challenging for all of us, but this project has allowed us to connect with new people outside of our usual networks. I have gained a deeper appreciation and sense of belonging to my community and Quebec as a whole."
- Holly, YCA Outaouais
"Everyone participated; all said that they enjoyed themselves; that they had a good time."
- Danika, YCA Eastern Townships
This year, the You are Here: Belonging Project is looking to bring more in-person activities to the seven regions of Quebec in which the project will be active, and is also looking to expand to other English-speaking communities across Quebec by having discussions with different regions and introducing the project.
